The mold for this pewter casting was taken from a juvenile Green Crab (Carcinus maenas) found in Wellfleet, Cape Cod. It is 2 3/4 inches wide, 1 3/4 inches long and weighs 1.2 ounces.
In spite of their name, green crabs come in a wide variety of colors, and are often mottled with blue, green, red, and white. These omnivorous crabs occur in many habitats, ranging from bay eelgrass beds to rocky shores and pilings. They are native to Europe, and were brought to America as stowaways aboard ships.
The technique for replicating the exact shape of sea creatures was developed by Jeff Mitchell, a pewter smith who lives in Wellfleet, Cape Cod. All sea creatures are cast in lead free pewter.
