The mold for this pewter casting was taken from a young horseshoe crab. It is 9.5" long and weighs 17 oz.

A lighter version of the Large Horseshoe Crab is now available at a suggested retail of $ 80.00. The new lighter version weighs slightly more then a pound whereas the old version weighs almost two pounds. As a result the retail price has been reduced by 26 percent.

To understand how this weight reduction was accomplished click the "View More Images" tab undernieth the H-Crab picture and then click "Next" to view the second picture. The upper half of this picture shows the bottom of the old casting while the lower half shows the bottom of the new casting. From this it can be seen that the mold for the old casting was developed by using the contour of the inner shell of the horseshoe crab, while the mold for the new casting imploys a technique that creates a uniform contour of 1/4 inch thickness from the outer shell.

Horseshoe Crabs are among the world's oldest and most fascinating creatures. They are estimated to be at least 300 million years old. The earliest Horseshoe Crab species were crawling around the Earth's shallow coastal seas for at least 300 million years before the dinosaurs even arrived, which was about 200 million years ago. Since that time, the Earth's landmasses have shifted dramatically, and thousands of other species have come and gone, but Horseshoe Crabs survived and today remain much as they were those millions of years ago. People have used Horseshoe Crabs for centuries. More recently they have been instrumental to scientific research that has contributed significantly to human health. Still today, when people see for the fist time this strange creature with an armored shell and spiked tail, it is often with trepidation, along with the question, "What is that thing?". Meet the Horseshoe Crab!

The technique of replicating the exact shape of sea creatures was developed by Jeff Mitchell, a pewter smith from Wellfleet, Cape Cod. All sea creatures are cast in a high grade lead free pewter.
