The mold for this pewter casting was taken from an actual Turritella Ungulina shell from the Caribbean. It is 2.0 inches long and weighs 0.5 ounces.
The common name for this is the Rounded Screw Shell. A robust species, its well rounded whorls-about 14 on mature specimens-bear fine spiral ribs. The color varies from pure white through to a near black, most being middle-to-dark brown. This shell is often used in local native jewelry.
The technique of replicating the exact shape of sea creatures was developed by Jeff Mitchell, a pewter smith who lives in Wellfleet, Cape Cod. All sea creatures are cast in a high grade lead free pewter.
